Lock up garden valuables 'to avoid thefts'

Personal insurance

14th May 2009

Keeping valuable items in the garden locked up is one way of avoiding thefts, it has been noted.

The advice has been issued by Confused.com, which has warned homeowners that numerous expensive objects in their gardens, such as patio furniture, may attract the attention of thieves.

According to the website's head of home insurance, Darren Black, people should make sure their insurance policy provides them with adequate cover.

He commented: "As we all hope for a hot summer, make sure that shade from the sun is not the only protection you have."

As well as ensuring expensive garden items are secured and out of sight, Confused.com recommends marking them with the area's postcode using an ultraviolet pen and installing security lights equipped with sensors.

Safegardening advises homeowners to inform a neighbour when they are going on holiday so that they can keep an eye on the property while it is empty.
