Scrappage scheme eligibility deadline 'extended'

Cars up to a T registration plate are to be included in the government's new scrappage scheme, it has been revealed.

According to Parker's, documents sent by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform to automobile manufacturers show that the deadline date for cars eligible for the discount has been moved from July 31st 1999 to August 30th.

Parker's claims that some motorists might be better off buying a new, pre-registered car instead of purchasing a vehicle under the scheme.

Cars eligible for the cash-for-scrap incentive must not be subject to any finance arrangement or be an insurance write-off and the purchaser must be the registered keeper of the old vehicle.

Recent figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) found that the number of new car registrations fell for the 11th consecutive month in April.

Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, remarked: "The UK motor industry remains of strategic importance and will play a key part in generating jobs and prosperity into the future."
