New data from the Department of Transport has confirmed a sharp fall in the number of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) on UK roads.

As well as a 12 per cent drop in the HGV traffic, the statistics also show a two per cent decline in the number of light vans.

Kate Gibbs, head of communications at the Road Haulage Association (RHA), said the news confirmed her organisation's worst fears.

She remarked: "The haulage industry is a tremendously valuable barometer for transport trends within the economy. As soon as the first green shoot does appear we will be the first to know."

Ms Gibbs added that it is unlikely that the HGV volumes will increase by the end of the quarter and urged the government to consider lowering the level of fuel duty.

the RHA has spoken on behalf of the road haulage industry for more than 60 years and now has almost 10,000 commercial vehicle operators among its membership.
