The cost of replacing the contents in the average UK home has been estimated to be £44,500.
Research by Sainsbury's Bank found that just over a quarter (27 per cent) of the overall value of a household's items are to be found in the living room, comprising expensive items such as DVD players, televisions and video game consoles.
Typically, the cost of items in the master bedroom is considered to be £5,900, followed by the kitchen at £5,400 and the study at £5,000.
The findings come soon after a Halifax study revealed that one in seven Britons claim to have an increased fear of being targeted by burglars as a result of the economic downturn.
Senior claims manager Martyn Foulds recommended that people ensure their valuable possessions are out of sight before they leave the house or go to bed.
"It is surprising to see that so many people are effectively advertising their valuables to thieves by leaving them visible through windows," he remarked.
