The number of new cars registered last month dropped by almost a quarter (24 per cent), new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show.
According to the data, the automotive market fell by 245,186 units - 28.5 per cent - during the first four months of the year, although demand for small vehicles continued to increase.
Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, noted that the development marks the 11th successive monthly decline in new car registrations.
He commented that, in spite of the tough economic conditions, the "industry is hopeful that its prospects will improve in the coming months and the steps it has taken will provide the basis for a sustained recovery once growth returns".
The SMMT is also optimistic that a car scrappage scheme scheduled to begin on May 18th will boost vehicle volumes.
Separate figures published recently by the organisation found that van and truck registrations fell by just under 24 per cent in April.
