The Association of Residential Letting Agents (Arla) has announced the launch of a new licensing scheme aimed at looking after the interests of consumers.
Under the arrangement, members of the organisation will have to acquire a license after demonstrating that they hold gold standard professional qualifications and ensure client funds are independently audited on an annual basis.
Ruth Lilley, head of membership and professional development at Arla, said the body had been campaigning for higher industry standards for the last ten years.
"For too long the rental sector has been seen as the black sheep of the property market with a lack of regulation of and a requirement for redress to protect the consumer," she commented.
The move has been welcomed by the National Landlords Association, Shelter, the Chartered Institute of Housing and the Trading Standards Institute.
Formed in 1981, Arla is the professional and regulatory body for UK letting agents and now has around 3,500 member offices throughout the country.
