Commercial insurance

1st May 2009

New guidance on the safe operation of sunbeds has been issued today (May 1st).

The revised advice has been published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and supports the Department of Health's Cancer Reform Strategy.

It also brings the guidance into line with that offered by the World Health and Organisation.

Giles Denham, HSE policy director, said the information is aimed at ensuring customers of tanning businesses can minimise risks to their health.

"We are publishing clear advice for sunbed salon owners and their customers, which reflects international health advice and good practice," he commented.

In related news, a ten-year-old girl recently suffered 70 per cent burns to her body after using an unmanned tanning salon.

According to the Western Mail, Kelly Thompson was taken to the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery in Swansea following a 16-minute stint on the tanning bed.

The incident comes just months after a 14-year-old girl was hospitalised in similar circumstances.
