There is no chance of the government meeting its target for cutting carbon emissions unless the UK's existing housing stock is dealt with, it has been claimed.
According to Kevin McCloud, TV presenter and architect, funding must be provided to allow people to retrofit and refurbish their properties to make them more eco-friendly.
Speaking at the Grand Designs Live London event, Mr McCloud commented: "We have 26 million existing homes in the UK ... Wlce need to start refurbishing now; 50,000 homes next year, 100,000 the next year, [and] 1.6 million homes a year by 2020."
He is one of the supporters of the Grand Designs Great British Refurb campaign, which is calling for financial incentives for people to refurbish their homes.
Statistics from the Energy Saving Trust show that households in the UK spend a total of around £2.4 billion on electricity to meet their lighting needs every year.
