'Acquire insurance' before doing DIY

Personal insurance

27th April 2009

Those planning to undertake DIY have been advised to make sure they have proper insurance cover as new figures show that more people are doing their own home repairs to save money.

Research conducted by ICM found that 65 per cent of people claimed they have carried out DIY, such as painting and plumbing, without the help of professionals, saving themselves a total of around £49 billion over the last year.

The survey found that 69 per cent of men said they saved money by doing DIY themselves, compared to 62 per cent of women.

Joanne Mallon, a manager at Sainsbury's Bank, advised homeowners undertaking DIY in their properties to make they use a registered electrician for major electrical works.

"Check you have good accidental damage cover and check that your insurer will cover you whilst you undertake the work," she remarked.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has also recommended that people only use tools and materials as directed by their instructions.
