The introduction of a new qualification for drivers of heavy goods vehicles are among plans that have been unveiled by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).

In its business plan for 2009-10, the body revealed that professional lorry drivers will be required to gain a Certificate of Professional Competence.

According to DSA chief executive Rosemary Thew, the organisation's aim is to continue improving safety on UK roads, as well as reducing carbon emissions, supporting the economy and promoting equality of opportunity.

She said a major feature of the DSA's work this year will be "to move forward with a reform of the way that learner drivers are trained and tested following the successful Learning to Drive consultation".

Among the other moves announced in the business plan were the launch of a new motorcycle test and improved customer service criteria.

The DSA is a trading fund which is expected to have a turnover of £152 million for the financial year 2007-08.
