The number of people volunteering to help good causes during the recession is on the rise, it has emerged, news that could have insurance implications for some charities.
According to YouthNet, almost 90 per cent of volunteer centres in England have seen a rise in the number of people applying to do volunteer work.
Meanwhile, CSV Community Service Volunteers has witnessed a 55 per cent increase in the number of full-time volunteers offering their services for between four and 12 months.
YouthNet chief executive Fiona Dawn said attitudes towards volunteering are changing and the accessibility of such activities is increasing.
She also said that a growing number of people are seeing volunteering as a good way to improve their chances of getting a new job during the economic downturn.
Launched in 1995, YouthNet was the first charity to operate exclusively online.
The organisation aims to promote social inclusion and encourage young people to achieve their goals.
