Despite efforts to reduce the amount of luggage lost by airline passengers each year, millions of items still go missing, it has been claimed.
According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, mislaid, stolen and damaged luggage remains a big problem for many travellers.
Aviation consultancy Sita told the newspaper that fliers can reduce the risk of their possessions going missing by making sure they arrive at the airport in plenty of time.
"The single biggest problem for baggage handlers is when bags are being transferred from one aircraft to another," the company commented.
Passengers are also advised to carry hand luggage only when possible, ensure their luggage is tagged with tough labels and acquire a travel insurance policy in case the worst should occur.
Recently, legal action against British Airways for lost luggage moved forward after a federal judge in the US denied the airline's motion to dismiss the case.
