FTA slams fuel duty hike

The chancellor Alistair Darling's decision to increase fuel duty from September has been criticised by the Freight Transport Association (FTA).
In his Budget speech today (April 22nd), Mr Darling announced that the price of petrol will rise by two pence per litre
According to the FTA, previous tax rises on fuel on December 1st 2009 and April 1st 2009 have forced logistics firms to spend an extra £533 million in costs.
James Hookham, policy director at the body, said the increase in fuel duty meant many companies would not now be able to invest in more eco-friendly vehicles and cutting their carbon emissions.
"It may be unpopular to tax motorists, but the fact is that private cars add far more to the UK's CO2 emissions than commercial vehicles," he remarked.
FTA is one of the largest trade associations in the UK and speaks on behalf of around 12,000 companies.
