New research confirming claims that mesothelioma and lung cancer can be caused by all commercial asbestos fibres has been welcomed by a solicitor representing former shipyard workers.
The report by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a body within the World Health Organisation that identifies causes of the disease, inhalation of all varieties of asbestos can lead to cancer, reports the North-West Evening Mail.
Ian McFall, head of asbestos policy at Thomsons Solicitors, said that while the report does not provide any new information, it reinforces the dangers posed by all types of asbestos.
He commented: "We cannot afford to be complacent about this substance, which is responsible for more than 2,000 people every year being diagnosed with mesothelioma in the UK."
Asbestos can lie dormant for up to 40 years and was banned in the UK in 1999, despite being first linked to cancer in the 1930s.
According to the Health and Safety Executive, one in 17 UK carpenters born in the 1940s will die of mesothelioma.
