As the weather gets warmer, homeowners considering having a barbecue are being advised to check their home insurance policy is up to date.
According to Steve Chelton, a development manager for a UK home insurance firm, while barbecues are a great opportunity for family and friends to meet up, open fires can pose a health risk if they are not properly managed.
Those intending to take advantage of the sunshine by cooking outdoors are advised to keep children and pets away from the flames, never leave a barbecue unattended and never pour flammable substances on it.
According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa), around 1,400 people are likely to end up in hospital as a result of a barbecue-related injury.
Rospa deputy chief executive Errol Taylor commented: "There is no need for people to have accidents if they take the correct precautions."
