The overwhelming majority (80 per cent) of UK motorists support the introduction of a car scrappage scheme, a new survey has found.

According to research by uSwitch.com, 37 per cent of those questioned would upgrade to a more eco-friendly vehicle if the government offered them cash incentives to do so.

Mark Monteiro, an insurance expert at the firm, said that while drivers want to buy new cars, their intentions are being frustrated by a lack of finance.

"This research indicates that many UK motorists would be in support of a car scrappage scheme for older cars, in exchange for a cash incentive of £2,000 towards a new vehicle," he commented.

Mr Monteiro added that a scrappage scheme implemented in Germany has been working well.

Recently, the government announced that subsidies of up to £5,000 will be offered to encourage motorists to purchase electric or plug-in hybrid cars.ADNFCR-1854-ID-19129448-ADNFCR
