Charities 'need more cash' for evaluation work

Charities

20th April 2009

Charities require more financial resources to undertake evaluation and monitoring work, it has been claimed.

According to a new report from charity thinktank New Philanthropy Capital (NPC), more than one-third of grant-giving organisations do not provide enough cash to enable such assessments to be carried out, reports Third Sector.

Commissioned by the Charities Evaluation Services, the research assessed how non-profit organisations communicate their performance to funders and how the information is used.

The report suggests that some grant-givers offer unrestricted funds on a full cost recovery basis.

NPC research analyst Gustaf Lofgren said: "Charities are getting better at collecting data, but they need to move on to analysing and using it.

"If they can show they are learning from their data and improving, we believe funders."

The NPC is dedicated to helping charities access the funds they need to operate.

It offers advice to donors, identifies 'high return' charities and conducts research to identify where need is greatest.
