Lift companies 'must ensure employee safety'

Companies involved in the manufacturing and maintenance of lifts have been urged to ensure the safety of their workforce.

The warning comes after a worker sustained serious injuries when he fell more than six metres down a lift shaft.

As a result of the accident, Northampton-based firm The UK Lift Company was given a fine of £2,000 and ordered to pay costs of £8,000 for breaking several of the Work At Height Regulations 2005.

Judith McNulty-Green, an inspector for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), said the accident could easily have been avoided if appropriate control measures had been put in place.

"Companies are required by the Health and Safety at Work Act and by the Work at Height Regulations to take all reasonable measures to ensure the safety of employees," he commented.

Earlier this month, the HSE introduced measures to make it easier for people to understand and comply with health and safety laws, including reducing the number of forms bosses must complete.
