A leading figure in the UK motor trade has said he is confident that a package of measures to help the recession-hit industry will be unveiled by the government.

Paul Everitt, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), told Reuters that the introduction of a car scrappage scheme should be the main policy initiative announced in the upcoming Budget.

He told the news source: "I am expecting something. I've been slogging my guts out, so yes - I think we as an industry deserve something.

"We set out with a package of measures in mind - that's what we want to get."

In addition to the introduction of a scheme that would offer motorists incentives to trade in their old cars for more eco-friendly models, the organisation has called for subsidised wages for short-time working and improved access to finance and credit for vehicle purchases.

Recent figures from the SMMT showed that van and truck registrations fell last month.
