Motorists with driving convictions could see the cost of their car insurance increase, it has been claimed.

According to Moneysupermarket.com, Britons who are found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol or using a mobile phone at the wheel could end up thousands of pounds out of pocket as a result.

Head of motor insurance at the price comparison website Steve Sweeney said motoring legislation is there for a reason and must be obeyed.

"Finding yourself uninsurable or facing unaffordable insurance prices as a result must be something most motorists could do without," he commented, adding that any increase in premiums would be dependent on the severity of the offence.

As well as increased premiums, convicted motorists also face hefty fines, driving bans and spells in prison.

Meanwhile, Getreading.co.uk reports that a growing number of companies are introducing bans on employees using their mobiles while in their? cars.
