Volunteer brokerage scheme opens with 'less funding'

The government's volunteer brokerage scheme has opened with £2 million less in its coffers than had been originally announced.
Funded by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the scheme was supposed to begin operating with up to £10 million, reports Third Sector.
However, a spokeswoman for the DWP said charities seeking funds to provide jobseekers with volunteering opportunities would only be able to benefit from £8 million.
A spokesman for the Office of the Third Sector also announced that the start date for a targeted support fund aimed at giving small grants to charities had yet to be announced.
Nick Hurd, a Conservative MP, commented: "We are getting the usual smoke and mirrors from the government. No new money from the Treasury and now shifting sands."
Recently, minister for the third sector Liam Byrne announced a £750,000 scheme to promote new ways for charities to campaign.
