The National Union of Students (NUS) has welcomed a government initiative aimed at tackling burglary.

Over the next year, the NUS will receive funding to help prevent students from becoming the victims of domestic crime.

Work will concentrate on different groups of students who are vulnerable at different times of the year, such as at Christmas or during exams.

NUS president Wes Streeting said that many students spend long periods away from their homes, increasing their risk of being broken into.

"Thanks to government funding, we will ensure that students are playing our part in protecting ourselves and our wider communities from the threat of burglary," he commented.

Recent research by Sainsbury's Bank found that more than half a million people have reduced their home contents cover in a bid to save money during the economic downturn.

In addition, 700,000 people have reduced or cancelled their buildings insurance.
