Publication of construction fatalities report 'delayed'

Construction

8th April 2009

The delayed publication of a report into construction industry fatalities has been welcomed by the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (Ucatt).

Rita Donaghy, chair of the inquiry, had been due to submit her report to work and pensions secretary James Purnell at the end of the month.

Ucatt has, however, learnt that this will now take place in late June.

The union's general secretary, Alan Ritchie, said he hoped the additional time would allow the inquiry to consider issues such as casualisation, blacklisting, gangmasters and statutory director's duties.

"When the inquiry was launched late last year we privately warned that there would not be sufficient time to examine all areas of the industry," he commented, adding: "Our concerns have now proved to be justified."

In 2007-08, 72 construction workers died, down slightly on the previous 12 months when 79 fatalities were recorded.

Ucatt has around 125,000 members and is the UK's only trade union specialising in construction.
