Car registrations continue to drop in March

New car registrations dropped by almost one-third (30.5 per cent) last month, new figures have shown.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), just under 314,000 units were registered in March, while the market in the first quarter of the year has fallen by 29.7 per cent.
However, diesel and small cars saw an improvement in their share of the market.
Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, renewed his call for a scrappage scheme, similar to the one implemented in Germany, whereby drivers would be offered cash incentives to scrap their old vehicles in favour of more eco-friendly models.
"March new car registrations are a barometer of confidence in the economy, from businesses and consumers alike," he commented, adding: "The fall in the market shows that government needs to do more to boost confidence."
The SMMT aims to support and promote the interests of the UK motor trade at home and abroad.
