Vending machines selling cigarettes could be banned in UK pubs due to the ability of underage smokers to use them, news which may interest those looking for pub insurance.
In August 2008, an investigation in the north-west of England found that underage volunteers were able to purchase cigarettes in 75 out of 120 pubs, reports the Publican.
Legal action is now being taken by Salford City Council against two companies that install the machines.
The local authority claims that the firms have committed an offence under the Children's and Young Person's Act.
Paul Flynn, a trading standards officer for Salford, commented: "In future, we may also look at taking a harsher view of the conduct of the breweries and pub owners regarding possible prosecution."
In related news, a TV watchdog has ruled that a Department of Health anti-smoking advert cannot be broadcast before 19:30 because it could frighten children.
