Scrappage scheme back in spotlight after demand for green cars drops

Calls for a car scrappage scheme similar to the one implemented in Germany have been renewed after new figures showed that demand for green vehicles fell by ten per cent in February.
According to Motoring.co.uk, the credit crunch is to blame for the drop in demand, despite an increase of 58 per cent in online car searches since December 2008.
Richard Mason, managing director of the website, said the government should not delay bringing in a scheme which would offer drivers cash incentives for trading in their old cars for more eco-friendly models.
"Promotion of the new car industry remains the most important objective in the current climate to help prevent further job losses," he commented, adding that "the government needs to stop resting on its laurels".
Recently, Germany extended it scrappage premium for motorists who trade in their old cars for more fuel-efficient versions.
