Owners of classic cars could be putting their vehicles at risk of theft by not installing modern security features, it has been claimed.

According to stolen vehicle recovery system manufacturers Tracker, some motorists are reluctant to have such devices fitted in case it impacts on the look and feel of their classic car.

Stuart Chapman, a former senior police officer and head of Tracker's police relationship team, said that simple precautions such as parking in well-lit areas and fitting a car alarm can help protect a vehicle.

"Thieves are opportunists, so anything car owners do to make it difficult can ... reduce the risk of theft," he commented.

Meanwhile, former police officer and classic car owner Geoff Taylor remarked that having good security features can result in reduced insurance premiums.

Recent research by Virgin Money found that people living in Swansea are more likely to claim on their car insurance than motorists in any other location in the UK.
