A number of businesses have been issued with fines for water pollution offences, it has emerged.

The Environment Agency (EA) prosecuted several firms, including Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water, between 2006 and 2008, reports the Northern Echo.

Strategy manager for the EA Dan Bean said the pollution of the country's waterways can cause damage to aquatic life and also have a harmful effect on human health.

"We take this extremely seriously and, where possible, will prosecute individuals and companies who are careless with our environment," he commented.

Alistair Baker, a spokesman for Northumbrian water, insisted that the company is "committed to environmental improvement".

Meanwhile, a member of Friends of the Earth claimed that many other as yet undiscovered incidents may be taking place.

The EA is the leading public body in England and Wales responsible for protecting and improving the environment.
