SMMT: New car production drops by almost 60 per cent
Motor trades
23rd March 2009
The production of new cars in the UK dropped by almost 60 per cent last month, new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have shown.
According to the data, just under 60,000 new vehicles were made at plants in the UK in February.
The drop in production is the largest ever recorded by the organisation.
Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, said the industry was now engaged in a "battle for survival", citing the low level of demand as a big problem.
Recently, the SMMT has been calling on the government to provide new incentives for motorists to trade in their old cars for more fuel-efficient models.
The body, which supports and promotes the interests of the UK's motor trade, has also been lobbying ministers to give assistance to its finance divisions that offer loans to help people to buy cars.
