The economic downturn may give a boost to the self-build property market, it has been claimed.
According to Rachel Pyne, head of customer services at BuildStore, the recession has resulted in more labour being made available, leading to the cost of building homes decreasing.
"You could say that in a way the recession has probably helped this particular niche market because land is cheaper and more available because developers aren't building," she remarked.
Last year, a report by the National Self Build Association claimed the construction of 25,000 extra self-build homes would save around 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
The research also claimed that each self-build property requires two or three building workers for a period of 12 months and a doubling of the UK's output of such properties would help safeguard some 50,000 jobs in the industry.
BuildStore is a UK supplier to the self-build, conversion and renovation market.
