Recession 'disproportionately' affecting motor trade

Motor trades

The economic downturn is disproportionately affecting jobs in the UK motor industry, it has been claimed.

According to FleetDirectory.co.uk, the fall in car sales has not only led to job losses at car manufacturers - such as Jaguar Land Rover, who recently axed 450 jobs - but have also hit related businesses, such as car parts firm Omron, which will shut down its Stourbridge plant next year.

John Philpott, chief economist at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, described the figures as the "most doleful" he has seen since the recession first began.

"The recession is having a far bigger impact on employment for young people aged under-25, with older people now protected by anti-age discrimination laws," he added.

Research by the Trades Union Congress found that the number of unemployed people in the UK outnumber job vacancies by 20 to one.
