Just over three-quarters (76 per cent) of consumers in the UK are in favour of a scheme that would see motorists offered incentives to scrap their old cars.
According to an independent consumer survey commissioned by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 66 per cent of people agreed that taking older, less environmentally-friendly vehicles off the road would be a good move.
Meanwhile, 61 per cent claimed they would probably take up the offer of a cash incentive of £2,000 in exchange for their old car.
Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, said the costs of such an initiative could be offset by an increase in VAT revenue.
He commented: "The scrappage incentive scheme is a popular way for government to support the automotive industry and provides good value for money for the taxpayer."
The SMMT aims to support and promote the interests of the UK motor trade.
