More than 100,000 people have found a new job thanks to Local Employment Partnerships (LEPs), a minister has claimed.

According to Tony McNulty, the employment secretary, the figures exceed the target set by the government and it is hoped around 200,000 people will be helped back into work though the scheme by 2010.

The initiative was launched in 2007 and sees employers working in partnership with the government to help people to find employment.

"We must build on this success; we are doing everything we can to ensure that more people can benefit from Local Employment Partnerships so that they can get back into employment," commented Mr McNulty.

It was recently reported that unemployment in the UK increased to just below the two million mark between October and December last year - the highest level since 1997.

During the three-month period, the number of people without work increased by 146,000, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics.ADNFCR-1854-ID-19035008-ADNFCR
