The UK's voluntary sector has a key role to pay in the recovery of the country's economy, it has been claimed.
Vince Cable, the deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, has said voluntary organisations and charities must be given adequate funding if they are to help steer the UK out of recession, reports Third Sector.
Speaking to delegates at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) annual conference in London yesterday (February 18th), Mr Cable commented: "I expect you could be a critical voice because the private sector is paralysed and government is struggling.
"Whether [or not] you can deal with the resource problem, I don't know."
Among the ways in which the third sector can help during the economic downturn is by providing independent financial advice and social housing to those who have had their homes repossessed, Mr Cable said.
The NCVO was founded in 1919 and aims to provide support to and speak on behalf of civil society.
