The number of people looking to buy a house increased for the third consecutive month in January, the Royal Institution for Chartered Surveyors (Rics) has said.
Simon Rubinsohn, the chief economist at Rics, said he expects the rise in activity to continue over the next few months.
"By no means could this relatively small pick-up in transactions be seen as representing a move back to a more orderly housing market," he said adding that "a sharply deteriorating employment picture may eat away at this improvement in sentiment".
Rics - the leading source of land, property, construction and related environmental knowledge - has also said mortgage approvals could rise above 35,000 a month.
Figures released by Halifax and Nationwide recently showed that house prices have fallen by around one-fifth since their 2007 peak.
Rics has said that many property surveyors believe the drop is closer to 30 per cent.
