YouthNet reports big increase in volunteering applications

Charities

12th February 2009

Volunteering organisation YouthNet has reported a 115 per cent increase in applications for 2008.

In figures released yesterday (February 11th), the charity revealed that applications had gone up from 26,185 in 2007 to 60,621 last year.

The charity believes that the onset of the recession was one of the main factors motivating more people to give up their spare time for a good cause.

Fiona Dawe, YouthNet's chief executive, told Third Sector: "This is an unprecedented increase in numbers and a sign that volunteering is becoming more accessible and attitudes are changing."

She also said that volunteering is a good way for people to improve their chances of getting a new job in a "turbulent job market".

Launched in 1995, YouthNet is the first exclusively online charity.

The organisation seeks to promote a socially-inclusive environment that engages, informs and inspires young people.
