Commissioning 'key' to delivering safe dementia care

Domiciliary care insurance

11th February 2009

Getting to the root of poor commissioning practice is the best way to achieve safe and dignified care for dementia sufferers, a homecare organisation has claimed.

According to the UK Homecare Association (UKHCA), good commissioning helps to recognise the need for extra domiciliary care time and flexibility is needed for those with the condition, reports Medical News Today.

Colin Angel, head of policy and communication at the organisation, said the government needs to be more robust in eradicating poor commissioning practice locally.

Referring to the newly published National Dementia Strategy, he commented: "While there is much to welcome in the strategy, we see an increasing number of local authorities attempting cost saving measures that limit time careworkers can spend with service users."

The UKHCA is the national professional association for domiciliary and nursing care providers. It aims to identify and promote the highest standards of home care in the UK.
