The importance of acquiring insurance to protect homes and belongings has been highlighted by widespread flooding that has followed last week's record snowfalls.
Some areas of the UK have reported almost a month's worth of rain in just 24 hours.
A spokesman for the Local Government Association said the flooding was not as bad as that experienced in 2007.
"We have no reports of flooding like 2007," he told the Independent, adding: "The councils are out and about and if there are any problems they will be sandbagging."
In the Steeple Bumpstead area of Haverhill, Essex, 12 people were evacuated from their homes.
According to the Times, however, many local authorites are preparing for possible evacuations after the Environment Agency (EA) issued 65 flood warnings.
The EA has said that around five million people in England and Wales currently live in flood risk areas.
Businesses are also advised to to find out if they are at risk from flooding and ensure the safety of all staff.
