Dirty homes 'could affect insurance cover'

People who leave second homes unoccupied and dirty could find their cover is affected, it has been suggested.
According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), leaving bits of food out in the open could attract vermin such as mice and rats.
Peter Straddon, Biba's head of technical services, said vermin can be behind various different problems for homeowners.
"If they come in they can start chewing up wires and that damage may not be covered under an insurance contract," he commented.
The organisation made the warning as many Britons attempt to cope with the impact of the recession which has put a strain on some people's ability to pay off their mortgages, credit card bills and loans.
Biba is the leading general insurance intermediary in the UK and exists to represent the interests of insurance brokers, intermediaries and their customers.
