New car sales 'fall further' in January

Motor trades

5th February 2009

Sales of new cars continued to fall last month, new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have shown.

Data for January shows that year-on-year car sales fell by almost one-third (30 per cent) - steeper than in December 2009.

The trade organisation has forecast that the car market in the UK will contract by a fifth in 2009 to 1.72 million units as a result of falling demand.

Several motor manufacturers have already axed jobs and suspended production of new vehicles.

Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT, said there is a clear need to stimulate demand for new motors in the British market.

"The UK motor industry is urging the UK government to introduce a similar scheme and help sustain jobs and business throughout the sector," he claims.

The SMMT supports and promotes the interests of the UK motor trade at home and abroad.
