'Check home insurance' for occupancy limit

Personal insurance

4th February 2009

People looking to insure a second home may want to bear in mind that many policies have an occupancy limit, it has been suggested.

According to Peter Staddon, head of technical services at the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), many buildings and contents policies contain such a limit which is set at about 30 days.

Over one-third (37 per cent) of home insurance policies do not provide cover if the resident is away for more than 30 days at a time.

Mr Straddon advised policy holders to "look at your policy, check what it says then call your advisor and ask them what you need to do".

He added: "If you are going away for a period of longer than 30 days you need to let people know."

Biba is the leading general insurance organisation in the UK. It represents the interests of insurance brokers, intermediaries and customers.
