HSE urges Polish workers to report poor conditions

Polish construction workers in the UK are being encouraged to report poor working conditions on sites, it has emerged.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has begun a campaign to ensure migrant workers receive correct guidance on the legal obligations of British employers.

Speaking at the Polish embassy, Stephen Williams, the chief inspector of construction, said the HSE was checking on the legal or employment status of workers.

He commented: "We just care about the health and safety of workers and all workers, including those from abroad, should receive protection from the risks of their workplace."

Mr Williams also called on Polish workers should report contact the HSE if their working conditions are poor or there is a threat to their health and safety.

The south-west branch of the Trades Union Congress has also released a DVD to help Polish workers avoid being exploited during the economic downturn, reports the Somerset County Gazette.
