Each home in the UK should have one person who is responsible for making sure the dangers related to carbon monoxide are avoided, it has been claimed.

According to the Carbon Monoxide Consumer Awareness Alliance (CMCAA), most people wrongly think they know enough about carbon monoxide risks.

Leigh Greenham, a spokesperson for the CMCAA, commented: "All fuels that burn with a flame are potentially able to generate carbon monoxide, so it is very important that people keep them in tip-top working condition."

Figues from the Carbon Monoxide and Gas Safety Society show that more than 500 people died between September 1995 and August 2008 as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. This represents an average of 39 deaths a year.

The CMCAA is made up of all major energy retailers, in addition to victim support charities. The organisation, which is administered by Corgi, also represents manufacturers of carbon monoxide alarms.ADNFCR-1854-ID-18989546-ADNFCR
