HSE to host tyre handling workshops

Motor trades

18th December 2008

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), along with the National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) and the British Tyre Manufacturers Association, is to stage a series of workshops across the UK to highlight the dangers of handling tyres.

Research by the NTDA found that a huge number of man-hours in the motor trade are lost due to back injuries cause by incorrect lifting, a factor that could also affect insurance claims and premiums.

Terry Aston of the HSE, who is also the chair of the Rubber Industry Advisory Committee, said he hoped the workshops would reach a wide audience throughout the country.

He commented: "Moving and fitting tyres involves a lot of manual handling; back and other muscular injuries are common. The cost to employers is considerable so we are pleased to work with the industry to have the opportunity to promote best practice."

The events will take place in Warrington, Melksham, Essex, Glasgow, Birmingham and Castleford.
