A Lincolnshire hotel owner has been found guilty of ignoring a prohibition notice issued by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Kulwinder Bola, proprietor of the Royal Renaissance Hotel in Skegness, was also found guilty of employing an unregistered gas fitter to install pipework and gas catering appliances.
In addition, he failed to appoint a planning supervisor to oversee a refurbishment project at the hotel.
HSE inspector Judith McNulty-Green said it was important to ensure all gas appliances and pipework are installed by a Corgi-registered fitter.
"Never be tempted to cut corners or save money - you will be putting your health, or even your life, at risk," she commented, adding: "Every year 20 people lose their lives from carbon monoxide poisoning."
Not only do hotels that ignore health and safety regulations put themselves and the public at risk, but they could also find it harder to be approved for insurance policies.
As well as a suspended sentence, Mr Bola has been ordered to carry out 200 hours of community service and pay court costs of more than £20,000.
