A spokesman for real ale campaign group Camra has welcomed the results of an online poll that saw pub signs voted as the number one icon of the English countryside.
John Howard responded to the Campaign to Protect Rural England survey by suggesting the results were encouraging for the industry, given the large number of public houses that are expected to close over the next few years.
"With the latest research suggesting one in eight pubs will be calling last orders by 2012, people in the business will welcome this public support for their trade," he remarked.
Pub signs came out on top of the Icon of England poll with 14.5 per cent of the vote, ahead of red post boxes.
They were nominated for the list by author Sebastian Faulks.
One particularly resilient public house in the UK is Camden's Hawley Arms.
One of the UK's most iconic pubs, the popular haunt reopened following a devastating fire earlier this year.
