As Christmas approaches, homeowners are being advised to make sure they have their most valuable possessions properly insured.

Research suggests that the number of homes damaged by fire will rise by up to 300 per cent on Christmas Day.

Getting an insurance policy will also be important for those people who are planning to jet off to sunnier climes over the festive period.

Keith Maxwell, a home insurance expert, urged people to take proper precautions to ensure their Christmas does not turn into a nightmare.

"For peace of mind, it is a good idea to make sure home insurance is up to date so that, should a fire take place, the home will be covered," he said.
