Firms through the UK are failing to recruit employees with the right skills for their respective roles, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has claimed.
John Dunsmure, managing director of the BCC, said many businesses continue to fall short when it comes to finding the right workers.
"We're going on about unemployment numbers, that's fine at one level but there aren't enough of the right people with the right skill sets to fill some of the positions out there," he commented, adding: "The government spends billions every year to address this issue but we're still falling short."
Mr Dunsmure said companies need to focus on their business plans and identify challenges.
In related news, an interim report for the government on employment claims that local councils should play a central role in tackling unemployment.
Councillor Stephen Houghton, leader of the review team, commented: "Worklessness is not an issue that can be solved in isolation and the causes and solutions vary from place to place; it will require all partners to work more closely, to be more flexible, to work better and to work smarter."
