Drivers with bad eyesight 'dangerous'

Personal insurance

27th November 2008

Drivers with poor sight are putting themselves and other drivers in danger and risking costly insurance settlements, new research suggests.

A survey commissioned to mark Road Safety Week by Specsavers claims that one in ten drivers have experienced a near miss on the roads when not wearing their glasses.

The poll also found that just over a quarter (26 per cent) of motorists have not had their sight checked since they passed their driving tests.

Helen Haughton, a spokesperson for road safety campaign group Brake, said the results showed that a large number of drivers on UK roads are "worryingly unsafe".

She commented: "Being perceptive and alert as a driver, especially on congested roads, is crucial. It is therefore vital that everyone has their eyes examined regularly to ensure they are not putting themselves or anyone else at risk."

According to the most recent statistics from Brake, 3,172 people were killed on Britain's roads in 2006.ADNFCR-1854-ID-18899952-ADNFCR
