Oven warning for restaurant insurance customers

Food and drink

19th November 2008

Eateries using gas ovens could unwittingly be putting their restaurant insurance and the safety of their workers and customers at risk.

That is the message from Westminster city council, following the closure of Brazilian restaurant Preto last week.

A fault with the restaurant's gas oven led to 13 diners being taken to hospital feeling unwell, BigHospitality reports.

The council's operation manager for food, health and safety Richard Block spoke out about the issue and reminded restaurants that it is currently National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week.

"I would also advise all businesses that use gas to install carbon monoxide detectors as an extra safeguard," he said.

The council recommended that restaurants replace old ovens with ones that come registered with the CE mark.

Carbon monoxide can be particularly difficult to detect, as it is odourless, tasteless and has no colour.
